Men's Tennis to Visit Columbia Friday, Host Cornell Sunday
April 12, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Though last weekend's sweep of the Princeton men's tennis team by Dartmouth and Harvard put the Tigers in chase mode for the top of the Ivy League, the Tigers are still alive as the final full Ivy weekend approaches.
Columbia, at 5-0 in the league, remains in control and can clinch a share of the Ivy title with a home win over Princeton Friday (2 p.m.) and the outright title with two wins. Columbia hosts Penn Sunday.
Princeton needs to win both this weekend and see Penn beat Columbia Sunday in order to remain alive for the title. The Tigers are one of four two-loss teams heading into the weekend, along with Cornell, Harvard and Penn. Dartmouth, at 3-1 in the Ivy, needs to have Columbia trip up once to get back in the race.
Aside from the Ivy race, the program will honor its two seniors, Florin Radu and Mohamed El Tonbari, at Sunday's final home match of the season against Cornell (1 p.m., Lenz Tennis Center). In addition to the senior recognition, Sunday's match will also see Princeton players wear gold shoelaces to show their support for Go4TheGoal, an organization that supports those battling pediatric cancer.
If the Tigers are able to knock off Columbia, which was ranked 25th in the nation on Tuesday's ITA list, it would be the third-highest-ranked opponent Princeton has defeated in four seasons under Billy Pate, behind No. 22 Harvard last season in San Diego and No. 24 Penn State earlier this year at home.
