U.S. Fencing Names Olympic Squad; Holmes Headed to Rio

She knew she was on the team, but the U.S. Fencing organization formally announced its delegation to head to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro Monday night in Richmond, Va.
Holmes joins sisters Courtney and Kelley Hurley, who teamed with Princeton alumnae Susannah Scanlan '14 and Maya Lawrence '02 to win the team bronze four years ago in London, on the U.S. women's épée team, and the American contingent will also get to compete individually. Katarzyna Trzopek is a replacement athlete on the women's épée squad.
The Olympic fencing competition will run August 6-14.
Holmes, who took time off from her Princeton fencing career to train to reach her Olympic goal, started at Princeton in the 2011-12 season and took bronze in the NCAA épée competition as a freshman before helping Princeton to the combined team title the following year and finishing fifth individually. Holmes earned a third All-America honor with a seventh-place finish in 2014 and will have one year remaining with the Tigers when she returns to the team.
