Leavell Notches Hat Trick in Loss to No. 1 Maryland

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/13/16) - Junior defender Amanda Leavell recorded her first career hat trick to pace the No. 11 ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team in a 15-6 loss to No. 1 Maryland on Wedneday night on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The unbeaten and two-time reigning national champions took a 10-1 lead in the first half but the teams were even in the second, trading five goals apiece.
Megan Whittle paced the Terrapins offense with five goals, while Zoe Stuckenberg had three. Two-time Tewaaraton Trophy winner Taylor Cummings added two goals and had a game-high eight draws.
The Tigers converted on every shot on goal. Trailing 6-0 it was Leavell from sophomore Camille Sullivan that put the Tigers on the board at 7:46 of the first. Leavell notched the second Tigers' goal on a free-position attempt at 24:53 o the second.
Freshman Kathryn Hallett scored an unassisted goal as she was all alone in her race towards Megan Taylor and the Maryland goal. Hallett's goal sparked a three-goal run for the Tigers, as Leavell followed with the completion of the hat trick. Senior Anna Menke won the draw and fed to junior Olivia Hompe down the right side. Hompe saw Leavell open to her left and a quick pass and score made at 10:00 made it 14-4.
The prettiest goal of the night came from leading scorer Hompe with senior defender Liz Bannantine assisting. Bannantine raced down the field in tranisition and Hompe pulled down a diving catch at the left pipe and buried it with 5:35 to play.
Hompe's 33rd goal of the season would be the final goal of the day when she drew Taylor out of the crease and buried a Colby Chanenchuk pass.
Junior Ellie DeGarmo made 13 saves on goal for the Tigers in the first 55:42. Sophomore Mary Kate McDonough played the final 4:18 but did not face a shot.
Maryland outshot Princeton 36-9, and won nine more draws, 16-7.
This marked the first time Princeton has lost a game by nine goals since the 2011 season.
The Tigers look to rebound on Saturday, April 16 in a battle of the two unbeaten Ivy League teams, Cornell and Princeton. Cornell defeated No. 10 Penn State 10-6 earlier today and is 10-1 overall. Game time is at 12 p.m.
