Cornell was leading 5-3 before a four-goal Princeton run in the second half. Sophomore Ellie McNulty scored twice before Rogers' two goals.
The Big Red scored the opening goal of the game and would hold the lead until midway through the second half. Cornell wouldn't take more than a two-goal lead at any point of the game.
Olivia Mattyasovsky opened the game with a tally but she was quickly answered by a tally by Abby Finkelston from Stephanie Paloscio. "At halftime we knew what we needeed to get better on," senior co-captain Liz Bannantine said. "Our defense was playing pretty shut down and Ellie was making crucial saves in the cage. We had high energy coming out and knew we could chip away little by little at the lead, and it starts with the draw and good possessions."
Princeton started to substitute in some different players in the second half on offense and it seemed to be the key to success.
"We decided to do some different things defensively," Princeton head coach Chris Sailer said after her team trailed 4-2. "We weren't getting great looks and we decided to go with a quicker, faster, more dodge-oriented offense and so we made some personnel changes and the kids really responded well."
McNulty converted a free-position attempt to cut it to a 4-3 game to start the second half.
Both teams stingy defenses went to work as the nets stayed still over the next nine minutes. Cornell and Princeton each forced each other into six turnovers as they utilized a double and triple teams and put up difficult rides on clearing attempts.
Catherine Ellis made good on an eight-meter chance at 19:49 - and it would be nearly 15 minutes until the Big Red would get another goal.
Freshman Kathryn Hallett set up McNulty in nearly identical plays in a span of 1:22 as the Tigers tied it at 5-5 at 16:09. Rogers gave Princeton its first lead of the game at 14:25 and pushed the lead to two, 7-5 at 10:41 with back-to-back unassisted tallies.
Mattasovzsky halted the four-goal Princeton run with her third of the afternoon on a feed from Emily Tripoodi on the right side of the goal at 4:52.
Hompe and Chanenchuk mirrored the play on the other end as the Tigers put their more experienced players back in on offense with time winding down.
Taylor Reed converted on a free-position attempt with 51 seconds to play to put her team within one, 8-7. Coffy came up with a big draw control but DeGarmo came up even bigger with a stop on Ellis with 16 seconds to play. A pass off to Bannantine and she would hang on to the ball as the whistle sounded.
