3 Races, 3 Cups; Highlights From A Memorable Morning For Princeton Rowing
April 19, 2016 | Heavyweight Rowing, Women's Rowing - Open, Men's Rowing - Lightweight
There have been plenty of successful Saturday mornings for the Princeton Rowing teams over the proud tradition of their four programs, but not many could have matched the historic success that the Tigers experienced last Saturday morning on both Lake Carnegie and the Charles River.
Now you can catch some of the highlights from those races by clicking on the play link above.
The excitement started early on the Charles River, when the third-ranked Tiger heavyweights became only the second Princeton boat since 1957 to win the Compton Cup in Boston. The heavyweights built an early lead and then fought off a Harvard charge to win by 1.5 seconds; in doing so, it became the second time in 80 years that the heavyweights have repeated as Compton Cup winners.
The ninth-ranked open women began action on Lake Carnegie by winning a seventh straight Eisenberg Cup in a regatta with three Top-12 programs. The highest-ranked team was Yale, which held the No. 5 spot in the latest poll, but Princeton took control of the race midway through and left Yale battling with No. 11 USC for second position (in which there was a dead heat).
Maybe the biggest head-turner of a result came in Princeton's final race Saturday, as the fourth-ranked men's lightweights ended Cornell's 18-race win streak to reclaim the Platt Cup for the first time since 2011. A blazing start for the Tigers made all the difference, as Princeton picked up multiple seats early and never let the lead go.
Both the open women and the men's lightweights will remain on Lake Carnegie this weekend, and they will be joined by the women's lightweights. The heavyweight men will head to the Housatonic River for a showdown with the top-ranked Yale Bulldogs. All races are scheduled to be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network.
