HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEKEND
One week removed from its biggest win of the season, junior Dagmara Lapins and the ninth-ranked Princeton open rowing team knows that it needs to continue building as it heads closer to the 2016 Ivy League Championships (May 15, Mercer Lake).
“At this point we are focusing on improving the level of the boat in all areas,” said Lapins, who rowed in the 4 seat last weekend. “We definitely have many things that we can improve upon and every practice we pick one of those things to highlight.
“This is an exciting place to be in as it shows that there is still speed to be found,” she added. “Hopefully by the time Ivies rolls around we will have worked out most of these things.”
It's even more exciting when you consider that Saturday's Eisenberg Cup victory wasn't even a perfect race in their eyes.
“Overall we were very pleased with our performance,” Lapins said. “Every week we focus on improving the execution of the race, no matter who our competition is. Despite having an uncharacteristically weak start, the middle 1K was our strongest yet. It was exciting to see how much we have progressed in this area.
“It is always fun to race Yale,” she added. “They are one of our biggest rivals. We knew going in that it was going to be a tight race, especially with USC in the mix. Because of this, it was especially satisfying to come away with a win.”
Two more Ivy League rivals will make the trip to Lake Carnegie this weekend, as both Dartmouth and Penn will be in town to compete for the Class of 1984 Plaque. This is the lone regatta of the regular season that uses more than just the 1V race to determine who keeps the hardware. In this case, the 1V, 2V and V4 will all factor into the winner of the Class of 1984 Plaque.
The 2V is 4-3 on the season, though two of those losses came in the season opener to Brown and Ohio State. They were about three seconds behind Yale last weekend, though they topped USC by more than 13 seconds.
The V4A is 3-4 on the season, and it is looking to bounce back from losses last weekend. Yale got away from Princeton in that one, though the Tigers stayed tight with USC and lost by fewer than three seconds.
Bucknell will also compete in the regatta this weekend.
