BOX SCORE
NEWARK, Del. (4/3/16) - The No. 13 ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team improved to 7-2 on the season with its third straight win, a 7-6 game at Delaware on Sunday. The Tigers had a 6-1 lead before a five-goal run by the Blue Hens tied it up at 10:01 of the second.
Junior Olivia Hompe scored the game-winning goal and classmate Ellie DeGarmo stopped 13 shots to give the Tigers the road victory.
The Blue Hens started to look resistant to take shots from the eight meter and with a chance to tie it at 3:30, elected to pass off to the left pipe with a shot going high. It would be foreshadowing of the final play of the game.
With one minute remaining, Amanda Leavell caused her fifth turnover of the game and junior Madeline Rodriguez got the ground ball. With 32 seconds left, Princeton called a timeout. Resuming action, Princeton failed on its clearing attempt and Delaware was given another chance to tie the game. With seven seconds left Becky Goshler was given a free-position attempt that would most likely send it into extra time. But she elected to pass the ball instead of taking the shot and the ensuing shot went high.
Princeton looked like it was going to run away with the game in the first half.
Sophomore Camille Sullivan cut across the front and buried an Anya Gersoff pass to put her team on the board. Shannon Hawley tied it at 1-1 at 26:12 right after she was stuffed by DeGarmo in a quick run to the goal off the draw. Delaware got the ball back and Hawley converted on her first of four goals on the afternoon.
For the next 20 minutes it was all Orange & Black.Hompe had an eight-meter shot from the center hash stopped by Taylor Carpentier but Gersoff was at the right pipe to get the ground ball and with a nice deke put the ball in the back of the net. Freshman Elizabeth George converted on a free-position attempt before Gersoff tallied her second of the game to make it 4-1 at 22:33.
DeGarmo made two big stops on the other end and which led to two more goals on the other end. Sophomore Abby Finkelston dodged her way to the goal and rocketed a side winder before getting free to score on a Hompe pass to make it 6-1 at 8:16..
DeGarmo stopped an eight-meter attempt from the center hash free position, her fourth save of the game right before Casey Lyons was able to sneak by an unassisted goal at 4:49. Hawley added her second of the game to make it 6-3.
The Princeton defense was solid and came up with some great stops on Delaware. A double came early on Hawley and forced her to cough the ball up just three minutes in, with six minutes left a swarm of three defenders forced another turnover and a Leavell ground ball and with eight seconds left Leavell stripped Hawley to conclude the first half. The Blue Hens weren't going away easily though as Hawley added two more goals in the first eight minutes to make it a 6-5 game.
DeGarmo was doing her part, as she denied the tying goal at the right pipe at 15:30 with freshman Nonie Anderson grabbing the loose ball. She made another stop on Coley Ricci at point-blank range to keep her team on top.
But Lyons was able to lay down a back-door goal on a beautiful feed from Erica Wein on the right side to tie it up at 9:35.
Princeton's leading scorer Hompe made her mark on the game with the go-ahead goal at 5:06 when she went hi-low for her 29th tally of the season.
Gersoff led the offense with two goals and one assist, while Finkelston scored twice and Hompe had a goal and an assist. Leavell caused five turnovers and had three ground balls. DeGarmo had three ground balls and had 13 saves with nine coming in the second half.Hawley scored four times and Lyons had the other two. Carpentier made three saves on 10 shots as the Blue Hens, a team receiving votes in the national poll, fall to 8-4 on the season.
Delaware outshot Princeton 34-16, and won the draw control battle 9-6. Princeton had three more ground balls, 21-18 and one more caused turnover, 14-13.
After spending nearly a month on the road, the Tigers will return home to Sherrrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium on Saturday, April 9 hosting Yale.
