PRINCETON, N.J. (4/9/16) - The Princeton offense exploded for 16 goals from seven different players, while the defense held Yale to just five goals as the No. 11 ranked Tigers improved to 3-0 in the Ivy League with a 16-5 victory over Yale on Saturday, April 9 on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Princeton outshot Yale 50-25. It marks the most shots the team has taken in a game since 40 on Temple in 2009.
“I think we really clicked on offense and we were seeing each other well,” sophomore Ellie McNulty who had a team-high four goals this afternoon said. “We were really playing the offense we've been trying to have since the beginning of the season and really played as that team today. It was a great team win.”
Clicking on both ends of the field was evident as Princeton (8-2, 3-0 Ivy) rattled off the first six goals of the game. Senior Stephanie Paloscio scored twice and added one assist during that 6-0 run in the game's first 17 minutes.
It took Yale (5-7, 2-2 Ivy) more than 20 minutes to lace a goal and it came on Tess McEvoy's fourth consecutive free-position attempt.
McNulty who added three ground balls, two draws and one caused turnover to her four goals was followed by freshman Elizabeth George's first career hat trick. Paloscio finished with three points, while freshman Kathryn Hallett, sophomore Abby Finkelston, junior Olivia Hompe each scored twice while sophomore Colby Chanenchuk and senior Anya Gersoff had two assists apiece.
“One thing I'm really happy about is having such balance in scoring,” Princeton head coach Chris Sailer said. “So many different kids stepping up, George with three, Hallett had a couple and having our middies score some more which is really nice.”
The Tigers added two more goals, the first a man-up free-position goal by sophomore Camille Sullivan after a yellow card on Addie Zinsner. Gersoff elected not to take the shot on her free-position and instead dished off to Finkelston on the left wing to push Princeton ahead 9-1.
McEvoy snuck the ball between DeGarmo and the left pipe with 38.1 seconds left. She made more noise as she drew another free-position attempt, which DeGarmo quickly dispatched to end the first 8-2 in favor of Princeton.
George scored just 25 seconds off of the opening draw of the second half, but Yale inched within five, 9-4, at 24:45 with back-to-back goals as Lily Smith scored an eight-meter and Emily Granger got a ground ball off a shot that hit the pipe and scored.
Leading scorer Hompe settled things down as she slammed in a goal off a great feed from Chanenchuk behind the cage that sparked another six-goal run for the Tigers. In the midst of the run was a hat trick by McNulty as Princeton went up 15-4 with 8:01 to play.
Taryn Gallagher ended the Bulldogs drought with a tally at 4:28 but freshman Hallett had the final word as she scored with 1.0 seconds left on a quick clear and sprint to the net.
DeGarmo made nine saves and earned the win for the Tigers. Sophomore Mary Kate McDonough played out the final 9:40 and allowed one goal.
The defensive unit was led by junior defender Madeline Rodriguez who had led the game in caused turnovers, draw controls and ground balls with three apiece.
“The line defense is so experienced and Ellie [DeGarmo] is playing so well behind them,” Sailer said. “When you have a unit that has played together for three years now, and Jenn Cook our defensive coordinator has done a great job with them and they have great systems. They're solid.”
The reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week Sydney Marks made 19 saves in net for Yale.
