For the third consecutive season, the Princeton women's tennis team will end its season in the NCAA tournament, and this time, the opponent is Georgia Tech and the site is South Carolina.
As is the case this season, Princeton's first NCAA tournament match was a neutral-site contest, and Princeton won or came within a point of winning in each of the first two occasions, getting a win over Arizona State at Alabama in 2014 and taking a 4-3 defeat to South Carolina at Virginia last season.
Friday's 2 p.m. match puts Princeton, ranked 39th in the nation, against Georgia Tech, ranked 17th. The teams haven't met this season or at any time during the career of the current Tigers, and Princeton and Georgia Tech haven't had any common opponents this season.
The Yellow Jackets have two ITA-ranked singles players in No. 34 Johnnise Renaud and No. 39 Paige Hourigan, plus an ITA-ranked doubles pair in No. 13 Hourigan and Kendal Woodard. Renaud was a first-team All-ACC pick this year and Hourigan was a third-team All-ACC honoree while Georgia Tech coach Rodney Harmon was the ACC Coach of the Year.
Georgia Tech was an at-large selection from the ACC after going 11-8 against ITA-ranked opponents and advancing to the ACC semifinals before falling to No. 7 Miami. Princeton went 7-7 against ITA-ranked foes with its top win coming against No. 34 Columbia at home on April 15.
Princeton counts a first-team All-Ivy pick in senior Amanda Muliawan, a second-team All-Ivy honoree in sophomore Katrine Steffensen and a back-to-back Ivy League Coach of the Year in Laura Granville.
The winner will face host South Carolina, which won its way to the SEC quarterfinals, or Big South champion Winthrop Saturday at 2 p.m. Those two teams will have their first-round match after Princeton's, at approximately 5 p.m.
