Princeton became the first visiting team to win Game 1 in a softball Ivy League Championship Series, but the Tigers will need one more win to become the first visiting team to win the ILCS overall.

The Tigers did it behind a strong pitching performance from Shanna Christian, who gave up seven hits, walked four, struck out seven and carried a shutout into the sixth inning. The Crimson had runners on base in all of the first six innings but stranded eight, including four in scoring position.

Skye Jerpbak hammered a home run to left field with an out in the second inning to give Princeton a 1-0 lead, and Marissa Reynolds homered with an out in the sixth, hitting the right-field foul pole to put Princeton up 2-0.

Harvard spoiled the shutout bid in the sixth when Haley Davis had a two-out hit that brought home a walk to Kaitlyn Schiffhauer.

Of Princeton's five runners left on base against Harvard pitchers Morgan Groom and Sarah Smith, four were in scoring position as the Tigers came close to building on their lead.

The teams entered a rain delay in the bottom of the fifth that lasted nearly two hours, including field prep, before the game resumed. That cost the teams some daylight, and the second game was called with Harvard up 7-1 in the bottom half of the sixth with Princeton as the designated home team.

Play is tentatively scheduled to resume at 3:30 p.m. Sunday with a determination to be made at 11 a.m. Sunday as to whether play will resume at 3:30. Harvard would need to close out the second-game win to force a third and deciding game.


Senior Shanna Christian had the complete-game win in the circle in Game 1.

Marissa Reynolds' foul-pole home run in the fifth put Princeton up 2-0, a run that became the difference when Harvard got a run in the bottom of the sixth.

• The win broke a three-game skid for Princeton at Harvard, with the Tigers' last win there coming in 2013.

• Princeton became the first visiting team in the 10 Ivy League Championship Series to win the first game.

• Senior Skye Jerpbak tied Kaylee Grant for the team lead in home runs this season with seven. Five of those home runs have come in the last seven games.

• Junior Marissa Reynolds had her fourth home run of the season, three of which have come in the last seven games.


Princeton and Harvard are scheduled to resume Game 2 Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
