PRINCETON, N.J. (5/7/16) – The Princeton women's track & field team is in first place after Day 1 of the 2016 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships.
The afternoon began throwers making a statement from the start. Sophomore Kennedy O'Dell retained the hammer throw title for Old Nassau with her first Heps individual victory. Making three-time Heps champion Julia Ratcliffe proud, O'Dell keeps the title at home with a throw of 55.10 (180-9). She had throws of 50.78, 53.36, 49.87, 52.98 before her final throw - the winner. Senior Brielle Rowe kept the big throws coming and took third with a toss of 51.67 (169-6). She found 50.40, 51.22, 49.99, 49.72 before her final throw of 51.67.
The duo closed the day with a 3-4 finish in the discus. O'Dell hit a PR of 44.42 (145-9) on her third attempt, while also launching to 44.15, 43.71, 43.16. Rowe was fourth at 43.76 (143-7), while also hitting 41.43, 42.95, 43.68 and 43.70.
Junior Allison Harris won the pole vault after clearing 4.00. The indoor champion as well, Harris cleared the height on her first attempt and wins the event for the first time outdoors, after being the runner-up in 2015 and fourth in 2014.
Adding to the team total was a fourth-place jump by senior Sara Ronde in the long jump. She only needed one attempt to do it as she nailed 5.61 (18-5). She went on to jump 5.38, 5.51 and 5.40.
In the final track event of the day it was a battle between Princeton senior Kathryn Fluehr and Cornell's Caroline Kellner in the 10k. The two exchanged leads in the race, but Kellner took the last lead, in the final two laps, to win the race 34:28.08 while Fluehr was the runner-up at 34:43.23 to get her team eight points.
Harris will compete in tomorrow's 100-meter hurdles final along with freshman Ellie Randolph. Harris ran 14.18, while Randolph clocked 14.15.
In the 400 hurdles, both senior Meghan McMullin and freshman Carly Bonnet reached the finals. McMullin ran 1:01.84, and Bonnet 1:02.07.
Senior Cecilia Barowski traded in her 800 for the 400 and put up the fastest time at 53.56. She will be joined in the final by junior Elisa Steele who clocked 56.21.
Sophomore Ashley Forte and junior Zoe Sims both qualified in the 800. Forte won heat 4 and had the second-best time of the afternoon at 2:08.41, while Sims second in heat 1 and seventh overall at 2:09.64.
After four events of the women's heptathlon it's Princeton's Taylor Morgan in first place. She has 3,305 points. Morgan won the shot put (13.22), was second in the hurdles (14.30), tied for second in the high jump (1.70) and sixth in the 200 (25.87). Senior Kerry Krause is fourth with 3,047 points and sophomore Maia Craver is seventh with 2,918 after a win in the 200 (24.95).
Day 2 begins tomorrow with the continuation of the heptathlon beginning at 11 a.m. The first event on the track is the steeplechase at 12:30 p.m, and the first field event is the triple jump at 1 p.m.
