Barowski Wins Heat to Advance to Quarterfinals
May 26, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (5/26/16) - It was quite ironic. At the time she was winning heat 4 of the 800 meters at the NCAA East Regional, Cecilia Barowski's name was being announced at the Princeton Varsity Club banquet as the recipient of von Kienbusch Award as Princeton's top female athlete.
Barowski had the lead throughout and hit 1:01.50 after 400 meters. She ran 1:03.35 on the second lap to finish with a time of 2:04.85. It was the third fastest time out of the 48 competitors in the preliminary round. Barowski is one of 24 that will run in the quarterfinal race tomorrow night at 7 p.m., in hopes of making the top 12 to make it to championships weekend in Eugene, Oregon for the second consecutive year. A first-team All-America in the 800 during the indoor season, Barowski posted an Olympic qualifying time of 2:02.62 this season at Stanford and has the seventh fastest-time in the NCAA this outdoor season.
In that same heat, sophomore Ashley Forte made her NCAA Regional debut and finished sixth with a PR of 2:07.64.
Junior Katie Hanss also made her first appearance at Regionals. She ran 4:31.25 in the 1500 to take 11th in heat 2 and was 38th overall.
In the final event of the night, senior Kathryn Fluehr capped off her career finishing 24th out of 49 in the 10k. She posted a time of 35:27.68. After the first 3200 meters she was in 18th place with a time of 11:18.86, and five laps later was 20th at 18:18.58. After 6400 meters she had improved to 13th, just one place out of qualifying. It was a close as she would come as she hovered around position 20 for the final nine laps
Sophomore Kennedy O'Dell competed in the Regional hammer throw for the first time in her career. She opened with a 50.14 (164-6) before her best throw of 52.66 (172-9). She didn't improve on her third throw with a 50.55 (165-10) and was ninth after flight 1. O'Dell wasn't able to hang on to one of the 12 qualifying spots after the next 16 competitors took to the circle and she finished 41st overall.
Junior Allison Harris will begin Day 2 for the Tigers tomorrow at 5 p.m., with the pole vault.
