Ivy Champ Rowing Team Reaches Remenham Semifinals At Henley Royal Regatta
July 02, 2016 | Women's Rowing - Open
The Ivy League champion Princeton open rowing team completed a memorable 2016 season with one final victory at the Henley Royal Regatta before being knocked out one race short of the Remenham Challenge final.
Princeton, which shocked No. 1 Brown to win the Ivy League title, reached the NCAA championship grand final in thrilling fashion, and won the Elite Eights draw at the Women's Royal Henley Regatta, reached the semifinals of the Remenham Challenge Cup — the top field for women's eights — by topping Molesey Boat Club by three lengths Friday. That marked the first Henley win for the open women since 2004, when they reached the Remenham final.
That was the target again this year, but Saturday's semifinal opponent proved too strong. The Leander Club and Tees Rowing Club defeated Princeton by 1 1/4 lengths to reach the final, where it will face the US National Team.
Princeton sent each of its three NCAA boats overseas, which should prove to be an invaluable experience for a large number of returning rowers. Both the varsity eight and the second varsity eight were victors at the Women's Royal Henley, while the varsity four reached its quarterfinal. The Tigers entered two boats into the Henley Royal Regatta; the varsity eight competed in the Remenham Challenge Cup, while a four from the 2V8 entered — but ultimately did not qualify — for the Princess Grace Challenge Cup.
