August 22, 2016 | Men's Tennis
With the U.S. Open main draw set to begin next Monday, Matija Pecotic '13 will aim to play his way in with qualifying matches at the National Tennis Center this Tuesday.
Pecotic and 127 other players will be looking to win three matches and earn one of 32 spots in the main draw. After play begins at 11 a.m. ET, Pecotic's first-round match will be the fourth one on, and he'll take on Alexsandr Nedovyesov, a 2010 Oklahoma State alum. Qualifying matches are free of admission charge at the NTC.
Pecotic was a match away from making it to New York a year ago, falling in the final of the U.S. Open National Playoff Championship. Since then, he's battled back from an injury that kept him away from competition from November 2015 until this May, when he returned for the Open du Pays D'Aix in Aix en Provence, France. His next tournament was earlier this month, when he won three matches before falling in the semifinals at the Challenger Banque Nationale de Gatineau in Gatineau, Quebec.
Pecotic's ATP singles world ranking peaked at 206th in November 2015 before falling to 429th earlier this month. His performance at the Gatineau tournament vaulted him 70 spots to 359th.
At Princeton, Pecotic was the Ivy League's only three-time league Player of the Year in men's tennis and was an ITA All-America selection in 2013, Princeton's first since 1984. In 2012 and 2013, Pecotic gained bids to the NCAA singles tournament, winning a match as a senior to become the first Tiger since 1996 to win a match at the NCAA singles championship.
Update: Pecotic fell 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to Nedovyesov in the first round of qualifying matches.
