Men's Tennis to Send Trio to ITA All-America Championships
September 12, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Three members of the Princeton men's tennis team will head to Tulsa next month for the ITA All-America Championships, the top collegiate individual event of the fall.
Alex Day and Luke Gamble, the 21st-ranked doubles team in the nation on the ITA's preseason list, were in the first position on the main-draw doubles alternate list. That makes the Tiger duo first in line to join the field of 22 pairs in the event of a withdrawal. If Day and Gamble get into the main doubles draw, they'll also get a chance to play in the qualifying singles draw.
Day, a senior this year, and Gamble, a junior, were Princeton's winningest doubles pair last year, going 20-13 while all 20 (13-7) spring matches they played came on court one. The pair faced four ITA-ranked opponents together last spring, winning three of the matches while one went unfinished.
Day and Gamble also had the most singles wins of any Tiger in 2015-16, taking 21 matches apiece between the fall and spring.
Junior Diego Vives was included in the qualifying singles draw after playing at the No. 1 spot in 21 of Princeton's 24 matches last spring and faced nine ITA-ranked players in that role.
The main-draw competition will run Oct. 6-10 after the qualifying draws are contested Oct. 3-4. Princeton wil open its fall season this weekend at the Hall of Fame ITA Grass Court Invitational in Newport, R.I.
