Women's Golf Takes Runner-Up Finish in Michigan
September 25, 2016 | Women's Golf
Among the 12-team field at Michigan State's Mary Fossum Invitaitonal when the tournament wrapped Sunday, only Miami (Fla.) stood in front of the Princeton women's golf team.
The Tigers finished in front of two of the three teams in the field that were included in the top 60 of Golfweek's Sept. 12 rankings, outdoing third-place and No. 58 Indiana by two shots and fourth-place and No. 42 Michigan State by five. The Hurricanes, who were ranked 33rd in the nation on that list, finished under par as a team at -4 with Princeton's +36 good for runner-up.
Princeton had competed at the event twice before, finishing fifth in 2004 and eighth in 2005.Â
Individually, rookie Alison Chang and senior Jordan Lippetz co-led the team, tying for seventh overall at +6. Chang finished with two birdies in each of her final two rounds, including one on the par-3 12th hole Sunday. Lippetz opened with three birdies in Saturday's first round, carding one on the par-3 seventh.
Tying for 27th overall, rookie Maya Walton carded three straight birdies in Saturday's first round, including the par-3 seventh, while senior Hana Ku tied for 31st, sophomore Tiana Lau tied for 35th and home-stater junior Tenley Shield tied for 45th as an individual, with Lau picking up one par-3 birdie and Shield two over the course of the weekend.
The Tigers' next event will be on familiar territory with all six other Ivy programs plus Delaware, Georgetown, Lehigh and Rollins coming to Springdale Golf Club for the Princeton Invitational next Saturday and Sunday.
Princeton's results are below, and complete results can be found here.
