Princeton Sweeps NWPC Weekly Awards; No. 14 in Varsity Poll

PRINCETON, N.J. – As Princeton begins Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) play tonight vs. the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers tonight as DeNunzio, the Tigers were selected as the No. 14 team in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Poll today and swept the NWPC weekly accolades.
NWPC Player of the Week – Matt Payne - In Princeton's triple OT loss to No. 6 UC-Santa Barbara, Payne scored four times and assisted on three others to pace the offense. After a three-point outing vs. Whittier, Payne dropped another hat trick, added two helpers and three steals vs. No. 11 UC-Davis. The sophomore had four points and drew six ejections in Princeton's 11-10 loss to Air Force. Today is the first time that Payne was named conference Player of the Week.
NWPC Rookie of the Week – Sean Duncan – During Princeton's four games at the Mountain Pacific Invitational, the freshman had seven points, seven drawn ejections and two steals. One of Duncan's highlight games was vs. Whittier where he scored two goals and drew four ejections. He also had two tallies, a steal and drew an ejection vs. No. 11 UC-Davis. It's the second straight week that Duncan scored the award.
NWPC Defender of the Week – Vojislav Mitrovic – In the team's triple OT loss vs. No. 6 UC-Santa Barbara, Mitrovic stopped 15 shots and then followed that up with 15 saves vs. Whittier. The junior also made 16 stops vs. No. 11 UC-Davis and wrapped up the Mountain Pacific Invitational with 14 saves vs. Air Force. It's the 10th time and second consecutive week that Mitrovic was given the weekly distinction.
Head coach Luis Nicolao's squad fell to No. 14 in this weekly varsity poll after a 1-3 weekend at the Mountain Pacific Invitational. The two-time defending national champion, UCLA, still remains at the top of the poll, followed by Cal., USC, Pacific and Stanford. Harvard, a NWPC foe, sits eighth.
It's a busy week at DeNunzio Pool. After tonight, the Tigers will take on Iona on Friday (8 p.m.), No. 15 Brown Saturday (7 p.m.), along with No. 8 Harvard (10 a.m.) and MIT (2 p.m.) on Sunday.
