Princeton Readies For Annual H-Y-P Showdown, Final Tune-Up For Ivy Championships
January 30, 2017 | Women's Swimming and Diving
The Princeton women's swimming and diving team has never minded the role of underdog in February, and that won't change when the calendar flips this week.
The Tigers will make two important road trips this weekend, and they are well aware that they'll do both as the hunter, not the hunted. The first of those trips comes this weekend, when Princeton heads to New Haven, Conn., for its annual H-Y-P weekend. The meet will stretch over two days, starting Friday night at 6 pm. The three Ivy League powers will return to Kiphuth Pool on Yale's campus Saturday at noon to complete the meet.
For years, H-Y-P weekend was mostly a two-team showdown between Harvard and Princeton. That has changed significantly over the last few years, and Yale will enter its home meet this weekend with the top Ivy League individual time in nine of the 14 events. The Bulldogs have competed in 14 dual meets this season and have yet to lose, including an impressive 5-0 mark in the Ivy League.
While Yale may have had the best performances this season, Harvard comes into the weekend as the reigning Ivy League champion. The Crimson, also undefeated on the season, have three other top times in the Ivy League, as well as the majority of a diving squad that powered Harvard to an Ivy title last season.
So where does that leave Princeton? Head coach Susan Teeter, ready for the final H-Y-P meet of her illustrious 33-year career, is excited to find out. She will bring a squad filled with youth and talent into New Haven this weekend, and several have already made an impact in the league. Freshmen Christie Chong and Gianna Garcia both have Top-10 times among backstrokers in the Ivy League, while sophomore Monica McGrath, who posted at least one victory in five different competitions this season, has a Top-5 time in the mile. Classmate Isabel Reis has the fourth-fastest time in the 200 fly.
Not surprisingly, Princeton's highest-rated time of the season belongs to junior Lindsay Temple, the reigning Ivy League champion in the 200 back. Temple posted a 1:57.70 in the Big Al Open, the third-fastest time in the season. Four of the Top-5 200 back times of the season belong to swimmers from either Princeton (Chong is fifth) or Yale, which sets up for a fascinating weekend showdown.
The H-Y-P dual will serve as the final regular season meet before all three teams head to Providence Feb. 16-18 to compete at the Ivy League Championships.
