Becker Scores Twice but Bemidji Takes Game 1, 5-3
November 22, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
Senior Max Becker collected his first career multiple-goal game, scoring Princeton's first two goals but Bemidji State would take Game 1 of the two-game series, 5-3.
Sophomore Jackson Cressey had his first three-assist game since Dec. 3, 2016 while classmate Liam Grande had two assists, his first two-point game since Dec. 16, 2016.
Becker put the Tigers on the board early, just 1:15 into the game. It came off an offensive zone faceoff win by Jackson Cressey, with Liam Grande helping to take possession. He found Becker in between the circles and wristed one in past Bitzer top shelf. Becker's first goal in 2016-17 was also against Bemidji, when Princeton had a 4-1 win in in Game 1 of the series.
Charlie Combs, who also scored twice tonight, answered back four minutes later after a turnover by the Tigers in the offensive end. Combs had a good lead up ice and got a breakout pass from Dan Billett for the tally at 3:49.
Jordan Heller scored twice within 3:58 to give the Beavers a 3-1 lead. His first came on a Tommy Muck rebound and the second came off a turnover at the blue line right after Princeton killed off a penalty but Heller came in hot off a line change to rip a shot towards goal. Freshman Ryan Ferland was able to slow the puck down but couldn't close on it completely before it crossed the line.
Becker added his second at 1:56 of the second period on a give-and-go with Grande. Cressey did a lot of work with a great poke check to force the Beavers to cough up the puck at their defensive blue line. The Tigers quickly went the other way with Grande setting up Becker for the backhanded goal to make it 3-2.
Combs was quick to answer once again on a long outlet pass.
The Tigers converted on their first power-play opportunity at 16:08 to make it a one-goal game with David Hallisey's third tally of the season. Cressey and Teves earned the assists as Princeton worked the puck around the zone and Hallisey tipping in a drive from Teves.
Gerry Fitzgerald scored the only goal of the third, at 8:40, on another long outlet pass.
Ferland made 15 saves in the first period before senior Ben Halford played out the remainder of the game. Halford earned a win over Bemidji last year in Minnesota, making 43 saves in a 3-1 win over the then-ranked No. 10 Beavers. Halford made 13 stops tonight and was pulled for the final 1:57 as Princeton tried to force overtime. Bitzer made two saves on the extra attacker play, one shot was blocked, and one was wide. He finished the night with 27 total saves.
Princeton was 1 for 2 on the power play, while Bemidji was 0 for 3.
The teams will take to the ice for Game 2 on Friday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m., at Hobey Baker Rink.
