Men's Squash Opens Home Schedule With Daunting Challenge vs #3 St. Lawrence
November 29, 2017 | Men's Squash
The Princeton men's squash team opened its season by showing it could stand its ground against teams looking to move past it in the national rankings. On Saturday, the Tigers will have the chance to make their own statement about why they could be a team making a big move during the 2017-18 season.
The eighth-ranked Princeton Tigers (2-0) will welcome third-ranked St. Lawrence (0-0) in the first of two home matches Saturday at the Jadwin Squash Courts, both of which will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network. Princeton will host St. Lawrence at 11 am, and then will return to the courts at 6 pm for a matchup against Williams. In between those matches, the Princeton women will take on Williams in Jadwin. Princeton opened its season the weekend before Thanksgiving with two strong road wins, including a 6-3 victory at 11th-ranked George Washington. Six underclassmen started for Princeton in that match, including four freshman, and five pulled out victories. Freshmen Duncan Joyce and Alex Engstrom both went the distance in their matches and scored important five-game victories.
The freshman who will garner the most attention this weekend, though, is No. 1 player Youssef Ibrahim, who should face one of the toughest tests he'll see throughout the season. St. Lawrence, which will be making its 2017-18 season debut Saturday, returns two players who were ranked in the Top 5 at the end of last season, Mohamed El Gawarhy and Ahmed Bayoumy. Either will provide a strong first Jadwin test for Ibrahim, the most heralded Princeton recruit in more than a decade and a former U-17 British Junior Open champion. Of course, the St. Lawrence player who doesn't face Ibrahim will get tested by Tiger All-America sophomore Adhitya Raghavan, who went 2-0 last weekend and is coming off a brilliant first year in Orange and Black.
While the matches on Court 1 will feature some of the top players in the sport, the team victory could become a battle of depth. St. Lawrence upset both Rochester and Columbia on its way to a third-place finish at the CSA team championships last year, but the infusion of young talent over the last two seasons has given head coach Sean Wilkinson his deepest roster at Princeton during his young tenure.
Williams, which came into the season ranked 20th in the preseason poll, will come into the weekend with a 1-3 record, though it won its most recent match over Hamilton.
