No. 14 Princeton Wraps Up Outright Ivy Title With Comeback Victory over Penn
November 04, 2017 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Maddie Bacskai's goal with 12 minutes to go proved to be the game-winner as the No. 14 Princeton Tigers (11-6, 7-0 Ivy) wrapped up the outright Ivy League Championship with a 2-1 victory over the Penn Quakers (9-8, 4-3 Ivy) at Ellen Vagelos Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Princeton has won 13 straight and 23 of the last 24 against Penn. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will occur tomorrow night at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com. It's Princeton's 25th Ivy League title and 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance.
Â
It took just three minutes into the contest for the Quakers to get on the scoreboard as Alex Hoover snagged a goal directly off a corner. In the 10th minute, Penn, looked for another tally, on a corner, but Grace Baylis picked up her first save of the contest.
Â
Princeton had consecutive corners in the 12th and 13th minutes, but both its attempts were blocked. The Tigers were denied on another corner with 12 minutes left in the first half and went into halftime, trailing for the first time since the UConn game (Oct. 8).
Â
Clara Roth wasted little time in the second half to tie the contest as she intercepted a Penn outlet and dribbled along the baseline before riffling in her sixth tally of the season.
Â
Princeton dominated the second half of action as it finished the game with over 10 corners in the last 35 minutes.
Â
In the 47th minute, the Tigers executed one of those corners as Bacskai earned her third tally of the year, deflecting a shot from Sophia Tornetta. Clara Roth inserted to Julianna Tornetta, who stopped it for her sister. Backskai would then touch the ball into the cage to give Princeton the 2-1 lead.
The Tigers finished with a 13-4 shot advantage, holding the Quakers to one attempt in the second half.
Â
The second weekend of November in the NCAA Tournament has become common place for Princeton as the field hockey team has played in at least NCAA Play-In Game every year since 2004. Last season, the Tigers made the tournament with an at-large bid, reaching the Final Four for the first time since 2012.
