Eye on the Tigers
Princeton is coming off of its 12th Ivy League title and 24 NCAA appearance in 2016.
The Tigers return 86 percent of their offense, including four of their top four scorers from last season. Most notably, All-America Olivia Hompe who finished with 59 points on 47 goals and 12 assists last year. Colby Chanenchuk posted a team-high 22 assists and chipped in seven goals. Ellie McNulty and Abby Finkelston added 26 and 24 points, respectively. Key losses on offense include Anya Gersoff and Stephanie Paloscio - who combined for 44 points last season. Other keys to the bolstering the offense this season include the return of Anna Doherty - who missed last season with an injury - along with Camille Sullivan and Kathryn Hallett.
Though the defense lost starters Liz Bannantine and Maddy Lynch, they do return veterans Madeline Rodriquez, Alex Argo and preseason All-America Amanda Leavell. Rodriguez had 29 ground balls and 14 turnovers last year, while in her first season Argo had 15 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Leavell is a threat both defensively and offensively. She is dominating at the draw circle with 20 wins last year which helped her to score nine times and assist once. She also finished second on the team in caused turnovers with 18 and was third in ground balls with 26.
The IWLCA Division I goalkeeper of the year Ellie DeGarmo is back for her senior season. She led the nation in save percentage nearly the entire season, concluding with a .536 save percentage and an 8.95 goals against average.
Seven freshmen join the class as well, and have already found chemistry with the squad thanks to fall break trips to Amsterdam & South Africa and a winter break trip to Florida. Laura Pansini and Tess D'Orsi both had five-points in the pair of games against the Dutch National Team in November. Later in the season, expect to see Steph Neatby join the squad following the conclusion of the women's hockey season. Already being successful on the ice, Neatby is the starting netminder for the Tigers and was named the national rookie of the month in January.
The Series
Princeton has a 20-9 advantage over Temple in the all-time series, since the teams first met in 1980. The first meeting was in the AIAW Tournament, the predecessor of the NCAA Tournament, with Princeton winning 7-6 in the consolation first-round game. Princeton and Temple also met in the 1983 NCAAs with Temple winning 16-6 and then again in 1995 NCAAs, a 14-8 win. The squads played each other every season 1991-2010. It's been five years since the last meeting, a 14-13 Princeton win in Philadelphia.
Scouting the Owls
Temple lost 12 seniors due to graduation after finishing the 2016 season 13-6. The Owls finished second in the BIG EAST tournament, falling to Florida in the title game. A young team has not lost a step, going 2-0 in its first two games with wins over Rutgers, 13-11, and Monmouth, 18-16. A strong portion of the Temple team is its offense with seniors Brenda McDermott and Morgan Glassford. McDermont already has 10 assists and three goals, while Glassford has three goals and two assists. She also does the little things on the field, leading the Owls in ground balls (9), draw controls (14) and caused turnovers (7). Sophomore Amber Lambeth has tallied a team-high eight goals, while junior Nicole Barretta has net five. The Owls have drawn 24 free-position attempts and have converted on seven of those opportunities. A big highlight for the Owls is its ride, as they've held teams to just a 68.6 clearance rate. Temple has been testing out both its new goalkeepers: freshmen Kelsea Hershey and Maryn Lowell. Though each have a win apiece, they've each allowed more than 12 goals per game. Hershey has started in both contests, but has made just two saves on 13 shots, while Lowell has nine stops on 16 for a .360 save percentage.
