No. 13 Princeton Dominates in Season Opener, 19-3

Ten different players scored as No. 13 Princeton opened the season with a dominating 19-3 win over Temple, on Saturday at Sherrerd Field as Class of 1952 Stadium.

It marks the Tigers' largest margin of victory since a 19-1 win over LeMoyne in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament, en route to the national title.

Temple, which entered the weekend scoring 15.5 goals per game and a 2-0 record, were held to just three goals today. Princeton All-America goaltender Ellie DeGarmo made 12 saves for a .923 save percentage to start her senior season.

All-America senior Olivia Hompe along with sophomore Allie Rogers both had five-point games. Hompe had four goals and one assist, while Rogers had a game-high three assists and two goals. Sophomores Kathryn Hallett and Julia Haney both had two goals and one assist apiece. Junior Ellie McNulty, junior Camille Sullivan and freshman Tess D'Orsi each scored twice, while junior Haley Giraldi had a goal and an assist. McNulty won a game-best four draws, while senior Amanda Leavell and sophomore Alex Argo caused three turnovers apiece. Hompe, DeGarmo and sophomore Nonie Andersen had three ground balls each.
Hompe tallied the first two goals of the game before Temple's Brenda McDermott net her fourth of the season. From then the Tigers went on a seven-goal run to take a 9-1 lead just midway through the first half. Princeton closed the first half with an 11-2 edge.

Princeton put the running clock on with the first goal of the second half, and went on an 8-0 run to take a 19-2 lead with less than five minutes to play.

Temple's Kara Gensler ended the drought with a goal, which was the final of the game, at 2:21.

Princeton outshot Temple, 39-22. The Tigers caused five more turnovers, 10-5, had a 13-11 edge in draws and an 18-12 advantage in ground balls.

Kelsea Hershey made four saves and allowed 15 in the first 43 minutes. Maryn Lowell made two saves while facing six shots.

Princeton faces No. 14 Virginia a week from today, Feb. 25, in Charlottesville at 1 p.m.
