Eye on the Tigers
Princeton dominated the season opener, winning 19-3 over Temple. The Owls entered the weekend after more than 15 goals per game before Ellie DeGarmo allowed just three goals while stopping 12 shots. Ten different players scored, led by senior Olivia Hompe who had four goals and one assist and sophomore Allie Rogers who had a game-high three assists and two goals. Sophomores Kathryn Hallett and Julia Hanney both had three points apiece. Junior Ellie McNulty, who scored twice, had four draws, while Amanda Leavell and Alex Argo caused three turnovers each. The Tigers are ranked No. 12 in the national coaches poll No. 13 in the media poll
The Series
Princeton sits just one game back in the all-time series with Virginia, 18-17. The Tigers won last year's game 14-7 in Princeton during the Tigers' home opener. Princeton was ranked No. 12 while UVA was No. 4. The Tigers had nine different goal scorers led by Olivia Hompe's five-point game, while Ellie DeGarmo made 13 saves. The Cavaliers have won the last three meetings in Charlottesville, in 2015, 2014 and 2013.
Scouting the Cavaliers
Virginia is 1-1 in the season after losing the season opener to Elon at home on Feb. 11, 11-10, the Cavaliers are receiving votes in the national poll. Virginia got back on track on Wednesday in a 15-14 victory at Richmond. Rookie Sammy Mueller had a six-goal game against the Spiders and now leads the team in goals with seven goals, while senior Besser Dyson has the most points with eight on two goals and a team-best six assists. Senior Kelly Reese and sophomore Maggie Jackson have six points apiece, while sophomore Avery Shoemaker adds five. Defender Kaitlin Luzik and Dickson both have won the most draws on the team with five apiece, while Luzik has a team-best five ground balls. Junior Rachel Vander Kolk has started in goal in both games and has made eight saves on 30 shots for a .267 save percentage and a 12.26 GAA. Backup Ashley Morris saw action in 13 minutes and made two saves on five shots.
