Princeton Offense Cashes in with 7-2 Win Over Brown
February 24, 2017 | Men's Ice Hockey
The Princeton men's hockey team is back in home-ice positioning for the ECAC playoffs, moving back into eighth place in the standings after a big 7-2 win over Brown on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
A win by the Tigers tomorrow against Yale assures them of home-ice in the first round of the ECAC tournament.
"We got a great start in the first five minutes, and I liked the energy we had," Princeton head coach Ron Fogarty said. "It puts us in position for tomorrow now to have a chance at the seven spot. The guys know what's at stake, I don't need to tell them. We just have to make sure we have a great first shift and keep our standard of play where its at and regardless of the score we have to keep doing all the little things to give us an opportunity to win."
The Tigers got goals from seven different players, as the team had its first seven-goal game in six years. The last time was also against Brown, a 7-3 game on Feb. 18, 2011.
Senior Colton Phinney made 32 saves as the Tigers improve to 12-13-3 overall and 7-11-3 in the ECAC.
Sophomore Ryan Kuffner tallied his 16th goal of the season less than five minutes into the game when he took in a long pass from the end boards, and skated in on Gavin Nieto beating him 1x1. Sophomore Max Véronneau and Matt Nelson earned the assists on the play. Véronneau made it 2-0 with a backdoor goal at 14:04 with Alex Riche and Kuffner assisting after the Bears turned the puck over in their defensive zone.
Defender Josh Teves net his fourth goal of the season with a solo effort on the power-play at 6:16 of the second. Two minutes later senior Ben Foster made it 4-0 when he let a rocket go over the shoulder of Nieto on a pass from captain Ryan Siiro.
Brown called a timeout and pulled Nieto with 15 saves and four goals allowed and replaced him with Tim Ernst. Ernst finished out the game with 21 saves and three goals allowed.
Junior Eric Robinson made it 5-0 before the second intermission with a wrap-around goal. Junior David Hallisey and freshman Derek Topatigh helped work the puck around the zone before Robinson finished it off.
Hallisey scored a goal of his own, on the power-play, just 35 seconds into the third period. He redirected a shot by freshman Jackson Cressey with Teves picking up the secondary assist as the Tigers continued to pour it on.
Brown's Tyler Bird kept Phinney from the shutout when he scored right off of a Brent Beaudoin face off win to Phinney's left at 7:02.
Freshman Joey Fallon scored his first career goal, burying his own rebound, at 9:51. Junior Joe Grabowski grabbed the puck behind the blue line and dumped it in to where Cressey won a foot race and slotted the puck for Fallon who was racing on. His first shot bounced off the pad of Ernst and back out to the left where he rifled in the second-chance effort, expanding the lead to six, 7-1.
Sam Lafferty tallied Brown's second goal at 12:22 after Charlie Corcoran and Max Willman battled for the puck along the end boards and knocking it out to Lafferty in the circle for the one-timer.
Princeton was 2 for 4 on the power play, while Brown was 0 for 1. Shots fell in favor of the Tigers 43-34.
The Tigers game versus the Bulldogs is slated for a 7 p.m., start. However, it will be following the women's playoff game with Quinnipiac, which pushed tonight's game time back to a 7:45 p.m., start.
