Hofstra Holds Off Late Princeton Charge 10-8
February 25, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse
The giveaway at Sherrerd Field for Saturday's Princeton-Hofstra men's lacrosse game was an orange and black winter scarf, which seemed like a reasonable idea when it was planned a few months ago. Who knew that it would be sunny and 75 degrees at game time on Feb. 25?
Despite the summery weather, it took Princeton's offense a little too long to warm up. Once it did, the Tigers were on fire, though it wouldn't be enough, as Hofstra would hold off Princeton 10-8 in front of 1,684 fans, most of whom were in shorts and t-shirts in what is still very much supposed to be winter.
The loss was Princeton's first in three games this year, with a visit from Johns Hopkins this coming Friday up next for the Tigers. Hofstra, now 2-0, hosts NJIT Tuesday.
Princeton would score just one goal in the first 47:02 of the game before scoring two in less than a minute and seven total in the final 17:58. Princeton goalie Tyler Blaisdell was sharp all day and kept Hofstra close, with the Pride ahead 5-1 late in the third for the biggest lead of the day.
Princeton three times would get it to within one goal, but Hofstra answered each time with the next goal, building it back to two. Princeton had two possessions down one in the fourth quarter, and Hofstra goalie Jack Concannon made saves on each possession to keep the Pride ahead.
Notes
* Tyler Blaisdell made 16 more saves and continued his really strong start to the 2017 season. A year after having a .448 save percentage and 11.75 goals against, Blaisdell is now at .654 and 7.20 for three games this season. The junior made nine of his saves in the second half.
* Michael Sowers was held scoreless until late in the third quarter but still finished with three goals and an assist. Through three games, Sowers has seven goals and nine assists, leading the team in assists and points.
* Gavin McBride had his streak of consecutive games with at least three goals snapped at seven, one off of Chris Massey's 21-year-old school record. McBride did have a goal and assist, and he extended his streaks of consecutive games with at least one goal to 12 and at least one point to 33.
* Zach Currier had a goal and two assists and now leads the team with eight goals for the year.
* Adam Hardej had a pair of goals, including one 47 seconds after Currier scored, making it 5-3 Hofstra late in the third. Prior to those two goals, Princeton had not scored in 32:34, back to Charlie Durbin's goal in the first quarter.
* Hofstra outshot Princeton 40-29.
* The previous game between Princeton and Hofstra played on Sherrerd Field was two years ago and was played in a blizzard that dropped four inches of snow during the game. This one was slightly different. Princeton leads the all-time series 16-15.
