Squash Team Pushes Reigning National Champion, But Yale Escapes With 6-3 Victory
February 04, 2017 | Men's Squash
The Princeton men's squash team continues to demonstrate its resiliency and improvement, both of which head coach Sean Wilkinson knows will benefit his program in the long run. Unfortunately, the lessons presently are coming during heartbreakingly close matches.
Princeton took its best shot Saturday afternoon in the home of the reigning CSA national champion Yale Bulldogs, but the Tigers fell just short of an upset for the second time in four days. Despite inspiring five-game victories from freshman Gabriel Morgan and sophomore Cody Cortes, Princeton couldn't find the final two wins it needed and fell 6-3 to open an Ivy League road weekend. Princeton will continue the weekend Sunday afternoon at Brown (2:30 pm).
Morgan, who dropped an 11-9 decision in the fifth game Wednesday night, flashed incredible resolve only four days later. He dropped the opening two games to Kah Wah Cheong, then went overtime in the next two to claim 12-10 wins. Morgan would not be denied in the fifth this time, as he claimed an 11-7 victory for his fourth win of the season and second in Ivy competition.
Cortes improved to a team-best 7-3 with his third 3-2 victory of the Ivy League season. He trailed Liam McClintock 1-0 and 2-1, but he used wins of 11-7 and 11-9 to improve his winning streak to four. Freshman Shehab Thabet also had a rally in mind, as he overcame a 1-0 deficit at No. 7 for a 3-1 win over Arjun Kochwar. Both junior Abhimanyu Shah and freshman Adhitya Raghavan pushed their opponents to fifth games, but neither was able to cross the finish line.
Despite losses, Princeton continues to show its growth over the span of one year. In 2016, Princeton took a grand total of 27 individual games and four matches in 8-1 losses to both Penn and Dartmouth, as well as a 7-2 loss to Yale. This year, Princeton took 51 games and 10 matches.
