Depth Powers Princeton To Huge 5-4 Victory At Yale
February 04, 2017 | Women's Squash
Princeton head coach Gail Ramsay has long believed in the depth of her team, and she felt it would come up big when she needed it most.
On Saturday, she was proven correct.
The fourth-ranked Princeton women's squash team fought off fifth-ranked Yale in New Haven by the slimmest of margins, a 5-4 victory that came from wins at the bottom five spots of the lineup. Led by the return of sophomore Isabel Hirshberg, who missed Wednesday's Penn match due to injury, Princeton win 15 of the 17 individual games in the bottom five matches to improve to 8-2 on the season, and 2-2 in the Ivy League.
The Tigers will try to go over the .500 mark Sunday when they take on Brown at 12 pm.
Hirshberg, playing at the No. 5 spot, won a 12-10 thriller in the third game to close her match, while Samantha Chai dropped only 12 individual points in her 3-0 win at No. 6. Both Kira Keating and Morgan Steelman were pushed to fourth games, but both were in control in the finale to get Princeton to four wins.
Sophomore Kate Feeley was able to put the finishing touch on the match, and she never allowed Madeline Tomlinson to get comfortable in the No. 9 match. Feeley won 11-5, 11-6, 11-5 to secure the team win.
The highlight match of the day came at the No. 3 spot, where senior Alexandra Toth put forth a terrific effort against Celine Yeap. The duo went to extra points in the fifth, though Yeap was able to walk away with the 13-11 win. Both Maria Elena Ubina and Gabriella Garr pushed their opponents to four games, but both fell 11-8 in the finale.
"We had a really exciting win today over Yale," Ubina said. "We have been working very hard in practice through exams and today it really paid off. I think we can use this positive momentum for our match tomorrow against Brown and the Ivy matches in the coming weeks."
