After playing only two matches over a 58-day span, the Princeton women's squash team will both open and close a furious February sprint — when it will play nine matches over 26 days — at the Jadwin Squash Courts. That stretch begins Wednesday night, when the fourth-ranked Princeton women host second-ranked Penn to begin a crucial week of Ivy League competition.
Following Wednesday's 5 pm match with Penn, the Tigers will head to fifth-ranked Yale for a 1 pm showdown on Saturday. The busy week will conclude on Sunday, when Princeton takes on No. 10 Brown at noon.
The Princeton-Penn match will open an important home doubleheader for both the men's and women's programs, and all five courts will be streamed live for both matches on the Ivy League Digital Network.
The Tigers (7-1, 1-1 Ivy) have overcome early-season injuries to their All-America duo of Olivia Fiechter and Maria Elena Ubina to remain a Top-4 program this season. Head coach Gail Ramsay has gotten significant production from the senior duo of Alexandra Toth and Gabriella Garr, both of whom share the team lead with seven wins on the season; junior Kira Keating also has seven wins on the season.
While the upperclassmen have done their part, Princeton is also happy with the early showings of the Class of 2020. The freshman duo of Morgan Steelman and Madison Soukup is a combined 11-1 on the season, and Steelman is riding a six-match win streak into Wednesday night — a stretch that includes a 3-1 win over No. 1 Harvard.
Penn (6-1, 1-1 Ivy) is currently ranked second nationally, and it went 2-0 against Princeton last season, including a 6-3 win in the Howe Cup semifinal. Both Samantha Chai and Isabel Hirshberg picked up wins in the Howe Cup semifinal match, while Fiechter fell 12-10 in the fifth game of a thriller at No. 1.
