Rookie Of The Year Kolodzik Leads 8 All-Ivy Tigers; Ayres Repeats As Coach Of The Year

For the first 31 years that the Ivy League presented a Rookie of the Year in wrestling, no Princeton Tiger ever achieved the honor.
In the last three years, two Tigers have claimed the award.
Two years after current teammate Jon Schleifer achieved the honor, Princeton freshman Matthew Kolodzik was named the 2017 Ivy League Rookie of the Year by unanimous vote, it was announced March 14 by the Ivy League. Kolodzik leads a cast of eight All-Ivy League honorees for Princeton, seven of whom will compete in St. Louis this weekend at the NCAA Championships.
Kolodzik (141) joins sophomores Pat D'Arcy (133) and Mike D'Angelo (157), and junior Jordan Laster (149) on the 2017 All-Ivy League First Team. Four first-team honorees is the most for Princeton since 1978, and it is the first time the Tigers have had more than one this century. D'Arcy, Kolodzik and Laster each went undefeated in the Ivy League, while D'Angelo went 4-1, including an overtime road victory over second-team honoree May Bethea of Penn. For each of the four, it was their first time on the All-Ivy League First Team.
Only three other Tigers had achieved first-team honors during the tenure of Chris Ayres, who repeated as the Ivy League Coach of the Year; the first one to do so under Ayres was Daniel Kolodzik '12, Matthew's older brother.
Freshman Ty Agaisse (125) and seniors Brett Harner (197) and Ray O'Donnell (285) were both named to the All-Ivy second team, while Schleifer (174) earned All-Ivy Honorable Mention.
Ayres shared the Ivy League Coach of the Year honors with Cornell's Rob Koll for a second straight season. This is the second major award for Ayres over the last two weeks; he was named the EIWA Coach of the Year after helping Princeton to a third-place finish at the EIWA Championships during the first weekend of March.
