Notre Dame leads the field with 57 wins after the first three rounds of competition at the NCAA fencing championships in Indianapolis Thursday.
Princeton stands fifth with 49 wins, with Ohio State second at 56, Columbia third at 51 and Harvard fourth at 49. Harvard has a +89 touch differential to +25 for Princeton to break the tie for fourth.
But, there are many bouts left to be had over the next three days. Rounds four and five will get going at 9 a.m. with the top four fencers in each weapon competing for NCAA individual titles beginning with 1:30 p.m. semifinals on ESPN3.
Wesley Johnson is the top épée fencer after the first three rounds with wins in 12 of his 15 bouts. The cut line for fourth in épée is 10 wins at the end of the first day, and Tiger sophomore classmate Michael Popovici is seventh at nine wins.
Foil Thomas Dudey is 11th in his weapon with eight wins, one more than Samuel Barmann in 15th. Edward Chin is 14th in saber with seven wins, one more than Peter Pak in 17th.
The women's competition will begin Saturday, and the school with the most wins combined between its men's and women's teams will take home the NCAA title.
