Johnson Makes Semifinal as Men's Competition Closes at NCAA Championships

Princeton sophomore Wesley Johnson made the semifinal in men's épée at the NCAA fencing championships in Indianapolis, battling Penn's Justin Yoo before falling 15-6.
Johnson won 15 of 23 bouts during the pool round as the men's competition concluded, good for the third seed in the semifinals. He earned his first All-America honor, as did fellow sophomore épée Michael Popovici, who finished eighth. Junior Thomas Dudey finished 16th and freshman Samuel Barmann finished 19th in foil, and junior Edward Chin finished 16th and senior Peter Pak finished 17th in saber.
Princeton stands tied for sixth as a team heading into Saturday's women's competition with Notre Dame and Ohio State tied atop the field at 86 wins apiece, though the Irish have the tiebreaker with a +86 touch differential to +78 for the Buckeyes. Columbia is third at 77 wins, followed by St. John's at 75, Harvard at 73 and Princeton and Penn tied at 64. Princeton has the tiebreaker on Penn with a -26 touch differential to -47 for Penn.
Senior épées Katharine Holmes and Anna Van Brummen, senior foil Ashley Tsue, rookie saber Maia Chamberlain and sophomore saber Sage Palmedo will represent the Princeton women, with the foil competition starting first at 9 a.m., épée following at 11 and saber starting at 1:30 p.m. Three of the five rounds of competition are Saturday with the last two and the individual finals Sunday.
