Entering the 2017 NCAA Championships with a nation-best streak of six top-four finishes, the Princeton fencing teams stand in good position to make it seven years in a row after a strong performance from the Tiger women Saturday in Indianapolis.
Katharine Holmes and Anna Van Brummen went a combined 25-5 through the first day of competition - Van Brummen beat Holmes 4-3 in their head-to-head battle - and occupy the top two spots in the épée competition heading into Sunday's final two rounds. The top four finishers after the five rounds of competition will compete for the individual NCAA title.
Maia Chamberlain went 13-2 on the first day of the saber competition and holds the second spot in the standings there, while teammate Sage Palmedo is also battling for top-12 All-America recognition with her 11th-place standing heading into Sunday's bouts. Ashley Tsue, Princeton's foil competitor, is also 11th after Saturday.
As a team, Princeton stands fourth with 118 wins and 40 chances for wins left Sunday. Notre Dame leads with 152 wins, ahead of Ohio State at 131 and Columbia at 126. Princeton is 13 wins clear of fifth-place St. John's at 105 wins with 24 left for the Red Storm Sunday, and Harvard is sixth with 104 wins but 48 chances Sunday.
Sunday's competition will get underway at 9 a.m. for all three weapons with semifinals for the individual titles beginning at 1:30 p.m. and video streamed on ESPN3.
