Fencers Set for NCAA Regional at Lafayette
March 08, 2017 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
The NCAA postseason begins Saturday for the Princeton fencing teams as the Tigers look to qualify as many as they can, up to the maximum 12, for the NCAA Championships later this month in Indianapolis.
Competition will get underway at Lafayette in men's and women's épée and foil at 9 a.m., women's saber at 10 a.m. and men's saber at 11 a.m. Finals for foil and épée are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and at 3 p.m. for saber. Live results can be followed here.
Performance at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional accounts for 60 percent of a fencer's résumé in being selected for the NCAA Championships, while regular-season results account for the remaining 40 percent.
The Mid-Atlantic/South region, which includes Drew, Duke, Fairleigh Dickinson (women), Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Lafayette, NJIT, North Carolina, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Stevens, Temple (women) and Wagner (women), has been awarded eight NCAA bids each in men's épée and men's saber, seven bids each in men's foil, women's épée and women's saber, and six bids in women's foil. Two at-large bids per weapon will be awarded nationally from across the four regions.
Sophomore foil Taylor Chin is Princeton's lone returning regional champion from last year, while junior foil Thomas Dudey won in 2015 and senior épée Katharine Holmes won in 2014.
Selections for the NCAA Championships, which will run March 23-26, will be announced Tuesday, March 14.
