Johnson, Nixon Win Gold at Pan-American Fencing Championships

Princeton épée fencers Kasia Nixon and Wesley Johnson went down to Havana and came back with nothing but wins from the Pan-American Junior Championships that wrapped up Tuesday in Cuba.
Individually, Freshman Nixon went 4-1 in her pool bouts and won direct-elimination bouts against opponents from Brazil, Mexico, Cuba and Canada before defeating another Canadian, Ariane Leonard, 15-8 to win the title in the 45-fencer field.
Sophomore Johnson went 6-0 in his pool bouts before he defeated opponents from Chile, Argentina, Brazil, fellow American Oliver Shindler of Ohio State and finally Cuban Yordano de la Caridad Suarez Santiuste 15-7 in the final atop the 48-fencer field.
In the team competition, Johnson and the Americans went through Argentina, Mexico and Canada to win the team title, surviving a 41-40 semifinal win over Mexico to keep their title hopes alive. Nixon and the U.S. team went through Chile, Colombia and Canada, winning 45-42 in the final.

Back in Princeton, the Tigers will make the short trip to Lafayette for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Saturday. Preview information for that event can be found here.
