Holmes, Chamberlain Earn Silver at U.S. Fencing National Championship

Princeton senior Katharine Holmes finished second and rookie Kasia Nixon finished third of 58 competitors in the Division I women's épée competition Friday at U.S. Fencing national championship in Baltimore.
Holmes went 6-0 in pool matches and Nixon went 5-0. Holmes then had to start her direct-elimination path against former teammate Susannah Scanlan '14 winning 10-9 as Scanlan finished 28th. Holmes went on to win three more bouts in the direct-elimination round, before meeting 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Kelley Hurley, who won by a single touch, 15-14. Nixon won three direct-elimination bouts before she also ran into Hurley, falling by the same score, 15-14, in the semifinals.
Sunday, freshman Maia Chamberlain finished second of 53 in the Division I women's saber event, going 5-1 in pool before winning four bouts in the bracket to make the final against 2016 Olympian and team bronze medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad, where Muhammad won 15-6. Eliza Stone '13 finished 26th. In the Division I men's épée event, Soren Thompson '05 finished 10th and Jonathan Yergler '13 finished 13th of 83 while senior Alex House tied for 36th.
Holmes, Van Brummen and Stone earned enough points throughout the qualifying competitions to represent the U.S. at the World Championships in Leipzig, Germany, July 19-26.
Holmes also helped her NYAC Red team win gold in a four-team competition, while in a 10-team men's épée event, Yergler was on a silver-medalist team with NYAC White and Thompson finished fourth with NYAC Red.
Monday, freshman Samuel Barmann finished 14th and junior Thomas Dudey finished 28th of 67 competitors in the Division I men's foil competition on the final day of the event.
In a pair of Veteran 70+ competitions, Jim Adams '61 finished sixth of 28 in men's épée Friday before placing 12th of 17 in the men's foil event Saturday.
