Legendary Princeton Strikers Meet on the Pitch
April 03, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Two of Princeton's most prolific strikers faced each other on Saturday in a United Soccer League game.
Thomas Sanner '15 of the Vancouver Whitecaps and Antoine Hoppenot '11 of Reno 1868 FC.
Sanner scored the game-tying goal for the Whitecaps, in a 1-1 draw at Reno - a team playing it's inaugural season.
The duo both rank in the top-10 in scoring at Princeton and both were Ivy League Players of the Year during their time as Tigers.
Sanner is third in scoring at Princeton with 79 points, while Hoppenot is 10th with 67 points.
Hoppenot is the only Herrmann Trophy semifinalist in Princeton history, earning the nod as his senior year while also earning second-team All-America honors. He was the 2010 Ivy League Player of the Year. Hoppenot was drafted in the third round by the Philadelphia Union and has 65 caps in the MLS. He signed with expansion team Reno 1868 FC this past February.
Sanner was the 2015 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year and was the Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2012. He was drafted in the second round by Vancouver and signed with the Whitecaps FC2 of the USL in June 2016. Two months later he was named the USL Player of the Week with the club's first ever hattrick, scoring three goals in the final 10 minutes in a 3-1 win over Arizona United SC.
