The 2016 Princeton-Stony Brook men's lacrosse game was played in a mix of snow and rain, which would be expected for the Opening Day in February, not the one in April.
The game a year ago was Princeton's ninth of the 2016 season, and yet it had the feel of opening day to it, and not just because of the decidedly non-spring weather. That game was the first as interim head coach for Matt Madalon, who had taken over the team earlier that week.
Fast-forwarding 52 weeks, Madalon is the head coach, and his career record is 9-5. He has his team in the national rankings, where it has been most of the season. The team is scoring at a near-record pace. The three-game sprint to the finish line of the Ivy League regular season, and hopefully a spot in the league tournament, is a week away.
First, there are the last two non-league games of the regular-season, first against a Stony Brook team that defeated Princeton 13-10 last year in Madalon's first game as head coach. In fact, the Seawolves have beaten Princeton 13-10 each of the last two years, with the first game of that run at LaValle Stadium in 2015.

Princeton and Stony Brook have played four times, and each team has won twice. Princeton's two wins came in 1992 and 1993, while Stony Brook's have been each of the last two years.
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
Princeton lost 13-10 a year ago to Stony Brook on a day in which the Tigers hit their scoring average for the 2016 season, 10.0 goals per game, a figure that was 35th in Division I and fifth in the Ivy League.
The 2017 Princeton Tigers are averaging 15.22 goals per game, a slightly better than 50 percent increase over a year ago. The Tigers are currently third in Division I in scoring offense, behind only Albany, who was Stony Brook's last opponent, and Virginia. In its three Ivy League games this season, Princeton has averaged 17.0 goals per game.
Should Princeton maintain its current scoring average the rest of the year, it would finish as the second-best offensive team in program history, behind only the 15.7 that the 1996 Tigers averaged.
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
Princeton ranks first in Division I in two statistical categories: team shooting percentage (.388) and saves per game (14.0). On the other hand, Princeton also ranks last in Division I in one category: clearing percentage.
Princeton is also third in scoring offense, third in assists per game, third in points per game, seventh in ground balls per game, seventh in man-up offense, fourth in scoring margin and ninth in man-down defense.
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
Gavin McBride has scored five goals in each of Princeton's last three games. The only other Princeton player ever to have three straight games of at least five goals is Wick Sollers, who did so in 1976. Sollers "only" had three in the next game and then followed that with six more in the game after that.
As for McBride, he has scored 29 goals this year in nine games, and he has at least three goals in 11 of his last 14 games, dating to last year. He also has the 10th-longest current streak in Division I with at least one point in 37 straight games and the fifth-longest current streak in Division I with at least one goal in 18 straight games.
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
Freshman Michael Sowers leads Princeton in points (51) and assists (27). He is closing in on two major Princeton freshmen records: goals (record is 28, set by Mike Chanenchuk in 2010) and points (55, set by Kevin Lowe in 1991). Sowers enters the game against Stony Brook in third place all-time among Princeton freshman in points, also trailing Ryan Boyle, who had 53 in 2001.
Sowers, a four-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week, is the only Princeton freshman ever with at least 20 goals and 20 assists. He is third in Division I in points per game and fourth in Division I in assists per game, and he leads the Ivy League in both.
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
Other than Zach Currier, no other Princeton player since 2010 has had double figures in ground balls in a game. Currier has done it six times, including four times in nine games this season.
Currier is the only player ranked in the top 10 in Division I in both assists per game and ground balls per game.
*Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â *
Princeton will be at Lehigh Tuesday night and then at Dartmouth next Saturday. Princeton has played seven of its first nine games at home and now finishes the season with four of its last five on the road.
