Princeton Displays Dominance in Hammer & 5k at Howell

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/7/17) - In the first home outdoor meet of the 2017 season, the Sam Howell Invitational, the Princeton women's track & field team displayed dominance in both the hammer throw and the 5k.
The Tiger hammer throwers opened the Invitational with a bang, as the top three collegiates in an event that featured 19 competitors.
It was the only field event of the day, as the other field events were moved to Saturday due to expected wind and rain on Friday evening.
Senior Julia Ratcliffe returned to her home circle at West Windsor Fields with a victory. She threw to 68.05 (223-3) on her second attempt. Ratcliffe also found 66.12 on her other countable toss. The 2014 NCAA Champion in the event, spent last year competing for the New Zealand national team where she landed a PR of 70.75 in London.
Junior Kennedy O'Dell was third, following an unattached athlete with a mark of 56.18 (184-4) on her final attempt. She also had throws of 54.75, 53.03 and 55.13. Freshman Ellen Scott-Young was fourth with a throw of 54.53 (178-11). She was over 51 meters on all five of her countable throws.
The other event the Tigers competed in today, the 5k, ended in another big sweep by the Orange & Black. Princeton went 1-2-3-4 in the 5k with junior Megan Curham, a two-time All-America in the 10k, picking up where she left off in 2015 with a win. Curham who took the 2015-16 academic year off from Princeton is also a two-time All-America in cross country and led the race from start to finish with a time of 16:31.95.
Senior Alexandra Markovich who was the Tigers' No. 1 runner in cross country this season finished second with a time of 16:40.11. Easing back to the track, a three-time Regional qualifier in the steeplechase senior Lizzie Bird was third at 16:49.06. Sophomore Allie Klimkiewicz, who was the lone Princetontian running the 5k at indoor Heps and took fifth was fourth tonight with a time of 16:49.39.
The meet continues tomorrow at 11 a.m., with the men's hammer, women's shot and women's javelin. While the first track event will be at noon with the 4x100 relays.
