Sowers Named Unanimous Ivy Rookie Of The Year And First-Team All-Ivy; Seven Tigers Honored
May 03, 2017 | Men's Lacrosse
When you join a club that previously featured a short list of names that included Scott Bacigalupo, B.J. Prager and Tom Schreiber, then you're definitely doing something right.
Michael Sowers has been named the unanimous Ivy League Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-Ivy League selection in a vote of the league's head coaches. He becomes the fifth Princeton freshman to be named first-team All-Ivy League and the Ivy League Rookie of the Year in the same season, joining Bacigalupo, the goalie from the 1992 and 1994 NCAA championship teams, Prager, one of the greatest goal scorers in program history, Schreiber, now possibly the best player in the world, and Mike Chanenchuk, who finished his career at Maryland, as the only Princeton players ever to pull off that double.
Princeton had four first-team All-Ivy selections and seven players honored in all.
In addition to Sowers, the first-team All-Ivy picks were goalie Tyler Blaisdell, defenseman Bear Goldstein and midfielder Zach Currier, who was a unanimous selection. Midfielder Austin Sims was a second-team All-Ivy selection, while attackman Gavin McBride - who also happens to lead Division I in goals scored - and defenseman Arman Medghalchi were honorable mention selections.
Sowers, the 12th Ivy Rookie of the Year in program history, has already set the Ivy League freshman record with 77 points, on 37 goals and 40 assists. Already the only player in program history with at least 35 goals and 40 assists in a season, he heads into the Ivy League tournament one point away from the Princeton single-season record for points.
Currier, who is a first-team All-Ivy League for the second straight year, has had a monster season has included 22 goals, 34 assists, 56 points, 114 ground balls, the team lead in caused turnovers and a .554 face-off percentage. The senior leads Division I midfielders in assists and points, and he is the only player in Princeton history with a season of at least 50 points and 100 ground balls. In fact, only eight players in Division I have at least 100 points this season, and the other seven combined have 48 points.
Goldstein has started every game but one in his four-year career. He is now a three-time All-Ivy League selection, with this his first first-team honor. Goldstein is tied for second on the team in caused turnovers and second in ground balls.
Blaisdell, a junior who has started since the middle of his freshman year, leads the Ivy League in save percentage and saves per game and is third in goals-against average. His 12.43 saves per game leave him fourth in Division I.
Sims, a second-team selection for the second-straight year, has scored 25 goals despite missing five games due to injury. In fact, the junior's 2.78 goals per game would lead Division I middies and be 10th overall had he played the minimum 75 percent of Princeton's games.
Medghalchi, a freshman, came back from being slowed by injuries to start the last 12 games on defense. He is tied with Goldstein for second on the team in caused turnovers.
McBride is an honorable mention selection, despite leading Division I with 51 goals. In fact, he will go into the Ivy League tournament just two goals off the school record of 53, which has stood for 21 years. McBride has played 14 games this season and has scored at least five goals in six of them. McBride had 29 of his goals in Princeton's six Ivy games, one off the league record of 30, set by Mike French of Cornell in 1974.
