Season Recap: Princeton Builds Foundation For Strong Future In 2017
May 26, 2017 | Baseball
Signature Wins:
Behind a stellar performance from Andrew Gnazzo and a two-run home run from Asher Lee-Tyson, Princeton took down the No. 22 St. John's Red Storm, 4-2, on the road on Apr. 26.
Gnazzo went five innings, the longest outing of his season. He struck out three hitters and scattered four hits in scoring his first career victory. Paul Tupper had a team-best three hits while Alex Dickinson and Lee-Tyson had multi-hit games. Conor Nolan pitched the final four innings, allowing just two hits, punching out three hitters, earning his first career save.
The Class of 2017 made one last impact during its final two home games with a doubleheader sweep of the Cornell Big Red on Apr. 28. The Tigers took game one 1, 9-7, and game two, 9-5.
In game one, Jesper Horsted was outstanding at the top of the order, registering three hits, two runs and a career-best four RBI. Cody Phillips was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. David Harding and Nick Hernandez had multi-RBI games while Alex Dickinson scored twice in the win. In his final collegiate outing, Chris Giglio went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs, earning the victory.
During game two, Paul Tupper saved his best for last as he went 3-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI. His six RBI are two shy of the single-game record set by Zack Belski last season. Horsted, Phillips and Ramzi Haddad all snagged at least two hits in the contest.
Awards:
Ivy League Rookie of the Week: David Harding (Apr. 11)
All-Ivy League: David Harding (second team), Nick Hernandez (honorable mention), Asher Lee-Tyson (honorable mention), Jesper Horsted (honorable mention)
Notes:
Princeton had two players hit over .300 in Harding and Nick Hernandez … Conor Nolan's nine stolen bases were tied for fourth in the Ivy League ... Zack Belski's five home runs were tied for 10th in the conference … Ben Gross' 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings are sixth best among conference foes while his 48 strikeouts were eighth highest.
Looking ahead: Princeton got major contributions from its freshman class with Harding, Nolan, and Ramzi Haddad on the offensive side along with James Proctor and Eli Kimbell on the pitching staff. Ben Gross will be back as well to lead the pitching staff as will Ryan Smith, who finished with 19 appearances in 2017. With a strong underclassman group, the Tigers will look to get back to the Ivy League Championship in 2018.
