Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Cornell
May 03, 2025 | Baseball
ITHACA, N.Y.- The Princeton baseball faced the Cornell Big Red on Saturday for a twin bill. After dropping the first game, the Tigers surged back to take the second contest thanks to nine runs on 11 hits.
Princeton and Cornell will face off in the series finale on Sunday.
Game 1: Princeton 1, Cornell 15
The Big Red got on the board with a two spot in the second inning. Cornell then tacked on seven runs in the fourth to balloon its lead to 9-0.
Princeton was able to plate a run thanks to an RBI single from Jake Koonin, which snapped the no-hitter.
The Big Red added six runs throughout the game to take a 15-1 game one win.
Game 2: Princeton 9, Cornell 5
Liam Kinneen made his tenth start on the mound for game two of the day. The freshman struck out the side to start the outing and it was no looking back from there. Kinneen racked up a new career high seven strikeouts to help lead the way to a crucial Princeton victory.
The Tigers put up two in the top of the first to get going quickly. Jake Kernodle came home on a Jake Bold line out before Will Robbins slapped an RBI single to left field.
Kernodle brought in Blowers in the top of the second to bump the lead to 3-0 in Princeton's favor.
The Big Red took advantage of a fielding error in the fourth to have two runners aboard before a double brought in its first run of the game. A groundout and a sacrifice fly tied things up at three apiece before Cornell sent a solo homerun to right field to take the lead.
Needing a response, Caden Shapiro did just that for the Tigers. The senior captain knocked a huge homer to tie the game up yet again, this time at 4-4.
Cornell tacked on an unearned run on a fielding error to reclaim the lead at 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth.
With two outs on the board in the top of the seventh, Shapiro reached on a single to bring up Bold. Bold saw four pitches before sending the fifth over the scoreboard in left field for a two run jack to reclaim the advantage, one that Princeton would not relinquish. The Tigers would add three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to give Jacob Faulkner room to close things out.
Faulkner notched three key strikeouts and a well executed toss to Nick Shenefelt at first to leave the bases loaded. The senior got the save after three scoreless innings and allowed just two hits.
