Complete Game Dominance From Faulkner Secures Win Over Cornell
May 04, 2025 | Baseball
ITHACA, N.Y.- The Princeton University baseball team took on the Cornell Big Red in the final game of the weekend series. In a must win game for the Tigers, Princeton gave Jacob Faulkner the nod for the start on the mound.
Princeton got two runs on the board thanks to an RBI double from Will Robbins in the top of the first.
Then Jacob Faulkner was off to work. The senior worked a three up three down inning to keep the game moving.
The Big Red got a two-out rally going in the second, but Faulkner came through and made the play on the ground out to leave the bases juiced.
The bottom of the fourth was another one-two-three inning for the Princeton pitcher to give him four scoreless.
Cornell was able to plate a run in the fifth, but Faulkner left two stranded with a big strikeout.
With just a one-run lead, the Tigers were hungry to regain the advantage. Jake Kernodle led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single from Jake Bold. Will Robbins came up to bat with two outs and knocked his second double of the game to bring in a run and bump the lead to 3-1.
Tommy Googins started off the top of the eighth with a single to center field and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from Grant Werdesheim. Caden Shapiro then worked a full count before knocking his second home run of the weekend to right field to make it 5-1 in favor of the Tigers.
Faulkner kept the Big Red off the board for the next two innings and faced the minimum in both.
The Big Red looked to rally in the bottom of the ninth but again Faulkner kept them at bay. He forced a quick groundout before striking out the second batter. A homerun would not deter Faulkner as he went on to strike out the final batter to close out the game.
Faulkner matched his career high for punchouts with eight and did not walk a batter.
Princeton will now head to Cambridge, Mass. to face the Harvard Crimson to make up the postponed game from April 13. The game is set for 1:00 PM.
