After Return To IRA Medal Stand, Lightweight Senior Duo Claims 2017 All-America Honors
June 14, 2017 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
Juliette Hackett and Christina Warren experienced plenty throughout their four years in the Princeton women's lightweight varsity eight, much of which came during a trying rebuilding process that has left the program in terrific shape moving forward. However, the duo capped their terrific careers with two special honors — Princeton's first IRA medal since 2011 and CRCA All-America honors.
Co-captains Hackett and Warren, who helped the Tigers defeat both Wisconsin and Radcliffe to earn bronze at the IRA Championships, were both named to the 2017 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-America team. This is the first All-America honor for both rowers, and the first time Princeton has had an All-America lightweight rower since 2014 (Rebecca Kreutter). Even more impressive for both the duo and the Tiger rowing program, it is the first time Princeton has had multiple All-America honorees in the same season in a decade (2017: Caitlin Corr, Caroline English).
While both seniors graduated this month, their leadership was felt by a varsity eight that will return six rowers and a coxswain next season. They also left with an IRA medal, an experience that meant so much to both.
"In my rowing career, I have experienced many 'almost there races and many disappointing losses," Hackett said after the IRAs. "These struggles just added more fuel to the fire and motivated me and my teammates to keep searching for ways to prepare for race day. I think all those passionate rebuilding years paid off today, as our success really came down to our preparation and the grit we have developed from some tough losses. It is such an incredible feeling to have this capstone in my senior year, but I could not be more grateful for the journey that made this win so sweet."
"This year means so much to me," Warren added. "It's so special to finish with our best piece, and probably the best piece I've had as a Tiger. Honestly, I'm grateful for the rebuilding years. We never ever gave up through some tougher years. We never stopped buying into the training and the goal. It was just a matter of time. Earning a medal in my very last race will be something I never forget. It is absolutely one of my most special and unforgettable moments."
