Shon '14 Ties for Ninth at Women's PGA Championship After Carding 63 in Second Round
June 30, 2017 | Women's Golf
Two days after Princeton alumna Kelly Shon '14 set the competitive course record at Olympia Fields near Chicago when she turned in a second-round 63, she completed the Women's PGA Championship with her best-ever finish in a major tournament.
Tying for ninth at -6, Shon followed her 63, which tied the tournament record, with a 71 Saturday and a 67 Sunday, jumping from a 27th-place tie heading into the final round.
Shon's second-round score was even with two members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Patty Sheehan and Meg Mallon. Shon started the round steady by making par on each of her first four holes before heating up with at least birdie on seven of the last 18 and doing no worse than par on any. The highlight of the round came on the 18th, her ninth hole of the day, when she made eagle on the par-5. It was the first of three consecutive holes in which Shon made at least birdie.
Heading into the tournament, Shon had posted two top-30 finishes in majors a year ago, tying for 22nd at The Evian Championship and tying for 26th at the ANA Inspiration. Her previous best round as an LPGA pro was a 66, achieved most recently at last week's Walmart NW Arkansas Championship. This weekend's venue at Olympia Fields has hosted several major tournaments, including two U.S. Opens, most recently in 2003, along with a pair of PGA Championships, a U.S. Senior Open and the 2015 U.S. Amateur.Â
