Leonard Merkin To Compete With Junior Pan Am Team In Lima, Peru
June 05, 2017 | Wrestling
Leonard Merkin, who recorded one of the fastest pins in the history of the EIWA Championships this past winter, will head to Lima, Peru, this weekend to compete with the Junior Pan Am Team in both the Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships from June 9-11.
Merkin placed second in the Greco-Roman Junior World Team Trials/National Tournament several weeks ago. The rising sophomore is currently the top alternate for the Junior Greco-Roman World Championships.
"Lenny's selection to the Junior Pan Am team is a great honor and an exciting opportunity to represent the United States in international competition," assistant coach Sean Gray said. "This is a testament to his incredible work ethic and serious aspirations to compete on a world level. This says a lot about Lenny and our program."
Merkin won 12 matches during his freshman season, though he wrestled up a weight class to take over the starting position at 165 midway through the season. Though the majority of his wins came at 157, his most exciting one was a :10 fall over Harvard's Kyle Bierdumpfel during the 165-pound bracket at EIWAs.
"I'm excited to represent Princeton and Team USA at the Pan American Championships," Merkin said. "It's been a dream of mine to go overseas and I'm glad I finally get the chance to make my mark on the international stage."
