Totten Promoted to Associate Head Coach of Men's Soccer
August 28, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Jim Barlow, head coach of Princeton men's soccer has announced the promotion of Steve Totten to associate head coach after serving nine years as an assistant coach of the Tigers.
Â
"Our staff and players are so happy for Steve being named Associate Head Coach," Barlow said. "He's been such a huge component of our team's success on and off the field for the past nine years. He represents much of what our program values – honesty, responsibility, competitiveness. He also enjoys working hard and pushing himself to new limits. On the field, his eye for details and insights into the game reflect both his understanding of and passion for the game. He's also gifted in his ability to process what he is seeing so clearly in the context of helping us make adjustments, both in training and in games. We are lucky to have him here."
Â
Since Totten joined the program in 2008, the Tigers have won two Ivy League Championships and earned two NCAA Tournament bids. Princeton has posted a 75-59-20 overall record and an 32-19-13 Ivy League record.
In just his second year, in 2009, Princeton reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in eight years, and made another appearance in 2010. The 2010 team will go down in history as it was the program's first ever undefeated league season en route to being crowed Ivy League Champion. They posted a 13-4-1 overall record and hosted an NCAA first round game for the second straight season and had the program's first ever Herrmann Trophy semifinalist. The 2014 squad finished the season on a nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) to capture a share of the Ivy League championship but was shut out of the NCAA Tournament by the committee.
In each of the last three years, Princeton has had the leading scorer in the Ivy League. Since Totten's arrival, three Tigers have been named Ivy League Players of the Year, one Rookie of the Year and 24 have been named first-team Ivy League selections.
The Tigers open the 2017 at Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 1.
