Princeton No. 11 In CWPA Preseason Varsity Poll

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers came in No. 11 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Varsity Top 25 Preseason Poll, the conference announced today.
The Tigers are the second highest team among Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) foes in the top 25 as Harvard sits right in front of them at No. 10. Brown is No. 15 while St. Francis Brooklyn is tied for No. 19.
The defending NCAA National Champion, Cal., is the No. 1 squad in the poll, followed by USC, Stanford, UCLA and Pacific. UCLA will face Princeton on Sept. 10 at DeNunzio Pool. The match scheduled for noon will be featured on ESPNU.
Head coach Luis Nicolao's squad went 18-9 last season and captured third place at the NWPC Tournament. Sean Duncan was picked as the Rookie of the Tournament after posting back-to-back two-goal outings in the Tigers' contests. For the season, Duncan finished with 49 goals, a team-best 61 drawn ejections and was named the NWPC Rookie of the Year.
Matt Payne had one of the greatest seasons in program history as he was the only player to ever score at least 60 goals and dish out 50 assists in a year. He was named first team all-conference tournament and first team all-conference.
Princeton starts 2017 at the Navy Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 2) vs. Salem International (10:30 a.m.), Fordham (1:30 p.m.) and LaSalle (4:30 p.m.).
