Princeton sophomore Kasia Nixon won the gold medal in the Division I women's épée competition Sunday afternoon in Virginia Beach, highlighting the January North American Cup event.
Nixon went 3-2 in the pool competition, earning the 45th seed in the direct elimination competition. After a 15-8 win over Penn alum Holly Buechel in the first round, Nixon got past Notre Dame's 20th-seeded Amanda Sirico, a third-place finisher at the NCAA Championships last year, 15-6. Up next was a 15-5 win over Harvard's Sancchi Kukadia before two Tiger teammates went head-to-head as Nixon battled fourth-seeded freshman Tatijana Stewart to a 14-13 win to make the quarterfinal. Nixon beat fifth-seeded Greta Candreva 15-10 to make the semifinals, where another Tiger-versus-Tiger battle followed. Nixon topped 2017 NCAA finalist and 24th-seeded Katharine Holmes '17 13-10 to set up a battle with Arizona State alum and 82nd-seeded Natalie Vie, who fell 15-9 as Nixon took the title.
Holmes tied for third while Stewart took 10th of 173 in the Division I competition and 20th in the junior event.
Eliza Stone '13 took fifth of 136 in the Division I women's saber event, with sophomore Maia Chamberlain 22nd and tied for third in the junior event, Gracie Stone '16 29th, and freshman Galen Cadley 61st in Division I and 40th in the junior event.
Junior Wesley Johnson led the Tiger men at the event, finishing 10th of 286 in Division I men's épée, where Jonathan Yergler '13 finished 28th, Soren Thompson '05 finished 67th and freshman Dylan Kim finished 135th and 50th in the junior event.
Sophomore Samuel Barmann finished 40th of 256 in Division I men's foil and 48th in the junior event while freshman Julian Knodt was 111th in the Division I event.
Senior Edward Chin finished 72nd of 178 in the Division I men's saber event.
