Princeton junior Max Véronneau has been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I men's hockey. Véronneau is one of 74 players who have been nominated, it was announced on Jan. 15 - on Hobey Baker's birthday.
Only 74 players in all of Division I men's ice hockey were nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, putting Point among the elite players in the nation.
Fan voting for the Hobey Baker Award is open from now until March 4, when the final 10 candidates will be named. Each fan can vote once per day.
Véronneau is one of the keys to Princeton's uptick in college hockey. Winning just four games the year before he arrived in 2014-15, the Tigers have turned things around. Last year, during his sophomore year he helped the team win 15 games and its first playoff series since 2009 - as the Tigers nearly doubled their offensive output from 2015-16 to 2016-17, scoring 43 more goals (103-06). He was selected second-team All-ECAC Hockey as he finished second on the team in scoring with 35 points on 11 goals and 24 assists. Véronneau led the nation in scoring two straight weeks during the season, helping him earn two ECAC Player of the Week honors and the league's December Player of the Month. In addition he was named the NCAA Ice Hockey first star of the week on Dec. 13, one week after being named the nation's third star. His best game was a four-point performance in an overtime win over Rensselaer in December, just a night after scoring twice and chipping in one assist against No. 18 Union. The next weekend Véronneau tallied three assists in Game 1 and two goals and one assist in Game 2 of a series sweep of No. 7 Quinnipiac. His most notable goal was the overtime game winner against Colgate in Game 2 of the ECAC first-round series.
The Ottawa native currently leads the Tigers in scoring with 25 points on nine goals and a team-best 16 assists. With 25 points in 20 games he ranks 17th nationally in points per game, averaging 1.25 ppg. This has helped propel the Tigers with one of the best scoring offenses in the country. This season Véronneau has had four three-point games including a hat trick in a 9-2 win over Dartmouth. A member of both Princeton's power play and penalty kill units, he has point in 15 of 20 games and boasts a +8 on-ice rating and has taken just three penalties.
This summer Véronneau attended both the Las Vegas Golden Knights and the Calgary Flames Development Camps.
